A 186-year-old newspaper company landed on Google’s radar when a leak revealed an internal memo sent out in 2017 which specifically instructed employees on how to boost traffic to the online classifieds. This, in turn, brought craigslist to the attention of U.S. Federal Trade Commission. The FTC charged craigslist with violating its agreement with Google, and, as a result, Google was permitted to sell its own version of craigslist, called Google Offer. The search giant reported a giant $3.2 billion payday on Thursday, October 25, 2018. This amount was approximately 100 times the amount of profit craigslist made in 2016.
